Sledding on a sled with metal rails and a wooden deck?

In my garage, I have an antique snow sled that has thin metal rails on it with a wooden deck, and a couple of ropes for steering the front of it. I've never used it out of the 10 years I've owned it (bought it at a garage sale). I live near Chicago and we just recently hit hard with a lot of snow, and me and my best friend would like to go sledding sometime. I've told my one co-worker about that sled I have, and he says it's a really good sled. I personally think it's unsafe and wouldn't go well in the snow, but what do I know, considering I never used it. I've used plastic garbage can lids to sled on before and I had an innertube sled before (like for a pool, but made for sledding) but I never used it. Does anyone know what my antique sled is like, anything good or bad to say about it? Or should I buy a new innertube sled? Thanks!
