What do you call it when you take a hard line position..in spite of fierce opposition?

but periodically float out the fact that you might be willing to reconsider things and that mistakes have been made, but only briefly, because soon you are back again to your hardline, and pushing hard for the fact that horrible things will happen if people don't accept your view?
