I have totally messed things up, now what do I do?

Well my friend told his best friend I like him, and he knew I liked him and I knew he liked me. We just never told eachother, and we did last night. And him and his gf split up about a week ago, but they are fwb. He doesn't want that but she does. And so he told me he wouldn't date me because of our age. We are 3 years apart. And so last night we talked until like 2:30 in the morning, and now his ex gf said he isn't allowed to talk to me for a while.So I thought maybe I should just give up. But I don't think I can. I have been crying since last night. Should I give up? If so...how?
