Would you join an organisation which historically has blood on its' hands & has cruelly persecuted minorities?

Is it really OK to delude oneself into believing that religion will not result in those things once again (until the next horrid example crops up) and to instead choose to believe that you be rewarded after life if you remain a member of whatever religious organisation?
