Do these observations seem abnormal for a 4 year old?

Sounds like an autistic spectrum disorder, or maybe these are inherited personality traits. Be glad they kicked him out, they must be a very poor pre school, you now have the opportunity to find a better one. Whetherher or not he has OCD, ASD or any other disorder,a good setting will be able to accommodate him and give him an effective education. He is very young, so just celebrate his many good points, and try not to dwell on any negative ones.
